We’re sick of companies who want to blame things on the customer. Have you ever called a utility company about a problem with billing and been told that YOU caused the issue? We even saw a professional web designer who blames errors on the visitor – “It must be YOUR computer”, his message reads – verbatim - “because everything works fine on my end.”

We had a similar experience ourselves when our Internet access was scheduled to be installed. The company didn’t show up when they said they’d be there, so we called to find out what the deal was. We were told, in no uncertain terms, it must be OUR fault for not verifying information, or not being around when the technician came out, or maybe it was that we got the date wrong. Then they tried to shift the blame to the electric service provider. Say WHAT? It took several calls, another 10 or so hours on the phone, and another 3 weeks before they finally got everything taken care of.

We don’t have the time or patience for that kind of garbage and we know you don’t, either. Not to mention that it’s just plain rude, irresponsible, and lousy customer service.

About those awards...

Maybe you’ve visited some web designers’ sites and seen the “awards” they list. Perhaps you even felt exactly the way they wanted you to: impressed.

We’d like to tell you a little bit about the “awards” we’ve been seeing lately on our journeys around the World Wide Web.

These awards are no more than ploys, based on vanity, to gain as many links back to the originating website. As one website we found put it:

“All web sites exhibit much thought, hard work, and a learned understanding of site design and implementation. Those efforts and the results, free for anyone to appreciate, deserve to be recognized.
Our Gold Star Web Award can be downloaded by anyone...”

There are tons of such “awards” out there, available to any and everyone, whether their site truly deserves an award or not.

Not to demean anyone who offers these “awards”, but they mean nothing in terms of how wonderful, accomplished or talented an individual or company is. All they mean is: A) that someone found the website, downloaded the “award” image and put it up on their own website (along with the requisite link back to the site they got it from), and B) the site offering the “award” has tons of links to it, which tweaks their search engine rankings by making it look like lots of people want to link to them.

Don’t be fooled by “awards”, flashy portfolios, or grandiose claims of, “We’re number one!” Many "professionals" will use any means possible to try to impress you, even if that means using "awards", claiming the work of others as their own, or outright lying.

"Whaddya mean, my site looks just like Bob's?!?!?"

Be aware that many web designers and graphic artists use templates – designs that they bought elsewhere and are available to anyone and everyone. This work isn’t created specifically for the client with his needs, business persona, etc. in mind and may be found all over the Internet. For example, an architectural firm in Cleveland, Ohio may find that their website and/or print materials look exactly like those belonging to an antiques dealer in Austin, Texas.

The work may be cheap but in this case, you DO get what you pay for. This isn’t work done with a focus on your success but rather, a focus on fast money for the designer with little to no effort on their part. Don’t waste your budget on crap like this!
